Happy birthday to Millie, a grand old Korat lady. She's 18 today, and watching her great-great grandkittens at play from a respectable distance. Mostly she snoozes. I tried to get her to sit up and have a picture taken for the record, and have put it in the Jenanca folder, but she wasn't that thrilled about posing. Absolutely no use making encouraging clicks or saying 'cheese', as she's very hard of hearing. Not that she ever misses out on anything she wants to be involved in!
Her place is over the central heating boiler (on low all year round). She likes the stool now to get up and down though, as there's a little stiffness in the back legs, and she'll come and find one of us and ask for it to be put back in no uncertain terms if it's been left out of place. Girl with brains this one. She's the Korat who would use our bathroom facilities when she had kittens, rather than have a litter box nearby.
Her other great love in life is food. Of course, she likes most what adds inches to her waistline rather than RC Silhouette, even though I showed her the picture of the attractive Korat on the bag. I indulge her. She has a few richer biscuits mixed in and then she's satisfied. Her favourite treat is Hi life tuna, and of course that's what she'll be having tonight.
Her pedigree name is Hibreeze Hurricane, but I can't say that there's ever been much of the whirlwind about her. She's always been immensely determined and very sure of herself, a solid little tank engine or mini bulldozer come to mind. When she came here as a kitten she gave one hiss at the other two girls in the house and ran past them to see what was on offer in the food bowl. And that is how she has gone through life, unfazed by anything. Unfortunately, at about 7 with her final litter, one I very much wanted, she developed pyo so it wasn't to be and she was spayed. I think that's the only time she has needed veterinary attention apart from routine matters. Even her teeth are all there intact (probably in better shape than mine.)
Her father was Jena Tiger Moth, a Korat bred by Jean Soich in US in US. He was imported by John and Peggy Mackie of Aerostar, and was John's adored boy into his 20s. So Millie must have inherited his robustness. She shows every sign of reaching that great age too.
She wasn't a show bench star. I can't remember that there were problems, rather that this was a period in life when I had active youngsters who wanted us to be involved in their hobbies at weekends. Time and finances could only stretch so far. However, she will always have her place in Korat history. She's the girl who when mated to her grandfather in 1989 produced a little pink girl kitten amongst the blues. Jenanca Lilac Lillee was the UK's first Thai Lilac to arrive, a birth that still causes reverberations to this day. Perhaps for the storm this caused she was well named Hurricane, but will always be plain Millie to me, an absolute gem of a Korat. May she continue in good heath for a while yet, and her sturdiness is a wonderful legacy that should live on in future generations.
